Mickalene Thomas was born in New Jersey in 1971. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She earned her MFA from Yale University and holds a BFA from the Pratt Institute. She has participated in numerous prestigious Artist in Residence programs, including the Studio Museum in Harlem in 2002-3, the Versailles Foundation in Giverny, France, 2011; and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, 2013.

Thomas has been honored with multiple prizes and grants, including the USA Francie Bishop Good & David Horvitz Fellow (2015); Anonymous Was A Woman Award (2013); Brooklyn Museum Asher B. Durand Award (2012); and the Timehri Award for Leadership in the Arts (2010).
