Best known for his photography, Roland Fischer has collaborated with Durham Press on a series of four screenprint portfolios, titled Façades on Paper I – IV, that depict abstracted, geometric views of buildings selected from his photographic works. Each portfolio is comprised of eight screenprints, measuring 35 x 25 inches on 2-ply museum board and released in an edition of one hundred.
Though drawn from buildings across the world including Beijing, Sao Paulo, and New York, Fischer has tightly cropped each image to remove them from their physical context, leaving only their titles to tie them back to their original edifices. With even their shadows removed, fragments of facades are flattened into two-dimensional abstracts with no depth or physicality – a method of abstraction perfectly suited for screenprint. The images in Façades on Paper are built color by color, inherently dissecting each snapshot of a facade into geometric layers through the screenprint process. The resulting prints form bold compositions, revealing the simple but starkly beautiful geometry in the facades that surround us.
