Beatriz Milhazes at Durham Press

Durham Press is pleased to announce the completion of Gold Rose, a series of four new print editions by celebrated Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes. Created and proofed in the fall of 2009, and competed last month, the four editions – SaltCinnamonRed Pepper, and Sugar – include Milhazes’s first diptych and triptych, and combine woodblock, woodcut and silkscreen techniques.  The series was first exhibited at the IFPDA Print Fair late last year and more recently at the James Cohan Gallery in New York.

The impressively intricate work used over 475 unique printing processes and almost 200 colors of ink.

Milhazes has been making work at Durham Press since 1996. In that time, she has collaborated with printmaker Jean-Paul Russell on over twenty editions, including FigoNoite de verão and Jamaica in 2006 and the Copacabana series completed in 2004.

Gold Rose marks a very special moment in my process working with Jean-Paul Russell. For the first time in my printmaking experience we started from a sketch that I made in my studio in Rio before I arrived at Durham Press. The sketch was the reference for the new drawings for the prints. The seven prints (shared in 2 singles, 1 diptych, 1 triptych) have a rhythm with extremely sharp, disturbing and unexpected visual moments. This series of prints consecrate an important exchange between my paintings and collages.

In 2011 Beatriz Milhazes will be featured in a solo exhibit at the Beyeler Foundation in Basel, Switzerland. Other recent solo exhibitions include: Cartier Foundation of Paris, France, 2009, and Pinacoteca do Estacao in Sao Paolo, Brazil, 2008.

Beatriz Milhazes Gold Rose Series

In September of 2009, Beatriz Milhazes returned to Durham Press to take on another enormous project, a series of seven prints that came to be called the Gold Rose Series. During her four-week stay she worked with a team of five to realize the beautiful proofs seen in the pictures below. She was also filmed for a documentary that is being made about her by Goritzia Filmes.

The Gold Rose Series is comprised of two singles, a diptych and a triptych all measuring 31 and a half inches in height – but of various lengths. The series uses warm color schemes, botanical forms as bold graphics and patterning, and intricate detailing typical to Milhazes’ work.

The series is now in production and will be released this spring. We expect Beatriz back to sign in April, when we plan to celebrate the completion of the edition with a reception of these impressive new works. More information on this soon. James Cohan Gallery will also host an exhibition of the works that opens April 1st in New York.
