Durham Press is pleased to announce Mickalene Thomas’s solo exhibition, Waiting on Prime-Time Star, now on view at Newcomb Art Museum of Tulane University. The exhibition brings together more than 40 works of paintings, photographs, prints, collages, sculpture, film, and installation, including Sleep: Deux Femmes Noires, a mixed-media collage printed and published with Durham Press.

The print, “Sleep: Deux Femmes Noires,” is an ambitious work made with 61 colors, 58 screens, 27 individual blocks, and 50 different collage components, including mahogany and cherry veneers. Each component and process adds to the lush composition of color, texture and pattern. The figures included in the collage are printed from an interior scene Thomas composed and photographed at 20 x 24 Studio in New York using a large format camera. Many of the landscape photographs used in the print are from Thomas’s personal travel in Africa.

Mickalene Thomas’s current exhibition, Muse: Mickalene Thomas Photographs and tête-à-tête, is located on the fourth floor of 547 West 27th Street, New York City at the Aperture Foundation. In a series of photographs that began with her mother, the world-renowned artist shows us her muses together for the first time.

“The women in Thomas’s portraits convey an absolute feminine power, their unwavering gazes channeling conviction and confidence. In compelling juxtaposition, they exude the kind of sexuality reminiscent of “blaxploitation” aesthetic of the 1970’s. Surrounding them are bold patterns and prints inspired by Thomas’s childhood, and references to art, literature and music.” (NYTimes) Though inspired by art history and culture, her most meaningful muses have been those women closest to her.

Beatriz Milhazes: Jardim Botanico

This is Beatriz’s first major U.S. retrospective and will feature over 40 large-scale abstract paintings, collages and screenprints inspired by Brazilian and European Modernism, Baroque forms, popular culture, and the decorations of Carnival.  During the early 1990s, the artist developed an unusual painting technique, in which she adhered separate images executed in acrylic paint—such as flowers, arabesques, lace patterns or peace-signs—onto canvases in a style that references collage, graffiti, and plastic decals. This practice results in richly textured surfaces that appear prematurely aged. The exhibition will  examine Milhazes’s evolution from softer, more decorative forms to harder-edged abstraction. Several Durham Press prints will be featured as well!

HIGH SPEED DRAWINGS demonstrates Nares’ masterful ability to capture precise moments in time and extend them through visual representation. In his new body of work, Nares introduces a new technique, using Chinese ink on paper to create rippling lines of various widths.

In a similar fashion to his Brushstroke paintings and ROAD PAINT series, Nares re-appropriates mechanical tools to create his artworks. He utilizes a spinning steel drum, powered by a motor. As the drum, with paper fastened to it, rotates, the artist draws lines of ink using paintbrushes he has created specifically for this body of work. As a result of the spinning drum and the artist’s precise movements, each band takes its own form. Nares’ artworks showcase his exploration on the subject of movement; some drawings he creates with one steady line, others from a continuously repeating stroke, but all manifest a careful choreography of spontaneity and control.”

I Was Born to do Great Things, at Kavi Gupta Gallery Chicago continues the exploration of my mother and muse, Sandra Bush. Following the film Happy Birthday to a Beautiful Woman (2012), the exhibition acts as a portrait of my mother through her belongings. Taking the form of a domestic installation, the exhibition will include a series of bronze works cast from these personal items. Carrying great significance to both mother and daughter, these articles of clothing and jewelry are destroyed through this process of casting and are preserved and transformed into highly finished objects of nostalgia and memory.

Polly Apfelbaum was selected as the 2013 Tyler Distinguished Alumna.  The annual program brings together Tyler’s alumni and its recent graduates, with a lecture, studio visits and a two-person exhibit at Temple Contemporary.

In Apfelbaum’s first lecture, she referenced Gene Davis’s work “Franklin’s Footpath” and how it had made an enormous impact on her as a young artist.  The monumental mural of colorful stripes was painted on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in 1972 in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, sponsored by the museum’s Department of Urban Outreach.  Apfelbaum and her collaborator, Dan Cole (BFA 2010), decided to use the piece, which carried so much history in the city, as the inspiration for their joint show.

The immersive installation covers the walls and floor.  Apfelbaum created a striped wool rug, made by artisans in Oaxaca, Mexico and wallpaper that followed the pattern up throughout the room.  Guests are welcome to walk on the piece, preferably with striped socks!  At the entrance to the show, neon signs direct visitors into the gallery where a pile of shoes are left in the corner in the wake of a colorful abyss that stretches out beyond.  The space itself opens up into an almost futuristic dimension where the stripes resemble motion at top speed.  The stretch of lines on the walls and floor invite visitors to float through to the adjacent room where Dan Cole’s band, Revedog, played a great set on the opening night amidst a poignant video installation.  Cole created the music, video and exhibition poster using old photos of himself and Apfelbaum at the age of 21 with a backdrop of the iconic image from Time Magazine of Gene Davis painting the museum parkway.

The show runs through July 11th.

New York | Downtown Fair

Durham Press just returned from the Downtown Fair in NY this past weekend and showcased Polly Apfelbaum’s vibrant monoprint from 2012 entitled Nirvana Park 1.  The new satellite fair to Frieze, produced by Art Miami LLC, was well attended and received positive feedback for the inaugural year.  Artnet News listed Durham Press as the best booth at the fair!

Noteworthy: “Happy Birthday to a Beautiful Woman” on HBO

Mickalene Thomas’s film “Happy Birthday to a Beautiful Woman” will premiere on HBO on Monday, February 24th at 9pm. The film will also be shown 3 other times during the week and can be seen on HBO on Demand and HBO Go. The 23 minute documentary is a portrait of her mother and muse, Sandra Bush. The film combines interviews and photos to create a powerful portrait of a woman who struggled with addiction, hardship and health problems.

The film has been screened at several festivals and museums including the Brooklyn Museum and the ICA in Boston. The 23 minute documentary is a portrait of her mother and muse, Sandra Bush. Mickalene describes her intentions and experience filming in interviews with Vogue and the New York Times.

Absolut Art Bureau, the unit within The Absolut Company responsible for global art initiatives, is pleased to announce a collaboration with Brooklyn-based artist Mickalene Thomas on a large-scale art bar installation that will be in operation during Art Basel’s show in Basel (June 13 – 16, 2013).

The ambitious installation, Better Days, will transform the Galerie at Volkshaus, in downtown Basel, into an immersive art experience for the duration of the show. It is inspired by a theatrical play ‘Put a Little Sugar in my Bowl’ and parties hosted by Thomas’s mother in the late ‘70s.

Better Days will present a nightly programme curated by Mickalene Thomas, including live performances and appearances by guest DJs. The bar will serve bespoke ABSOLUT cocktails designed by the artist in keeping with the installation’s theme.

Thomas will transform the Galerie at Volkshaus, Basel into an apartment environment that takes its inspiration from the parties hosted by her mother and long-time muse in the late ‘70s.

Better Days is Mickalene Thomas’s literal and conceptual reconstruction of the 1970s domestic aesthetic, complete with faux wood panelling and wallpaper as well as custom sofas reupholstered with the artist’s signature textiles. Each evening, Thomas will introduce guest and resident DJ performers, including DJ YSL, Derrick Adams and Simon de Pury, who will emulate the disco soundtracks of her mother’s parties. Among the guest performers will be local jazz musicians, as well as Solange Knowles, the internationally-renowned recording artist who has collaborated with Thomas on several recent creative projects.

Durham Press is pleased to announce the completion of Mickalene Thomas’s Sleep: Deux Femmes Noires. The new edition is a large-scale mixed media collage, comprised of woodblock, silkscreen and photographic elements. It measures 38 ½ by 80 ½ inches and is made in an edition of 25.

Sleep: Deux Femmes Noires is based on a small collage that Thomas used to conceive both the print and a large painting (of same title) that featured prominently in her solo exhibition “Origin of the Universe”. The widely acclaimed traveling show, organized by the Santa Monica Art Museum, was at the Brooklyn Museum earlier this year. Sleep, both in title and subject, directly references Gustave Courbet’s erotic painting Le Sommeil from 1866, but transports the interior scene of reclining nudes to a disparate collaged landscape of bright color and pattern. The work hints at influences from the Hudson River Painters, Romare Bearden, David Hockney and Seydou Keita. Thomas deftly weaves themes of black female beauty, power, and sexuality into classical genres of portraiture and landscape, creating works of stunning originality and strength.
