NEW RELEASE: MICHAEL HEIZER

MH_HardEdgeEtchings

Hard Edge Etchings | Etching with Aquatint | Edition of 28

Michael Heizer has completed a new group of intaglio prints with Durham Press titled Hard Edge Etchings. The portfolio consists of four prints, each measuring 22 x 19 ¼ inches.

The Hard Edge Etchings were made from custom-cut, shaped copper plates with unique silhouettes, relating to his works on nonstandard canvases: Hard Edge Paintings and his recent Wet Paintings, all of which were shown recently in a solo show at Gagosian, Beverly Hills. Unlike his Hard Edge Paintings—which recall Color Field abstraction with their art historical title and their bold, distinct areas of colors or tone—the prints contain spontaneous yet precise etched lines and shapes that often intersect and overlap. Their active, energetic surfaces harken to the early modernist works of artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich while being decidedly contemporary.

Michael Heizer has been collaborating with Durham Press since 1988. The Hard Edge Etchings are available as a portfolio or individually directly through Durham Press. For more information about these prints and others by Michael Heizer, please contact Gwyneth Fearnhead.

Nares’s work focuses on movement, rhythm and repetition. His most iconic works are usually made as a single brushstroke, a visual recording of gesture and the passage of time across the canvas. Using brushes of his own design, he repeatedly creates and erases his strokes, over and over again, until he feels he has made a mark that represents a precise balance between intent and improvisation.

Each screen is printed with a different shade of ink in a slightly different profile, which gradually builds the image into a rich and highly textured finished print.

James Nares was born in London in 1953 and currently lives and works in New York. His work is included in numerous public and private collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of Art, and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.

Paul Kasmin Gallery is currently featuring an exhibition of new paintings entitled “Road Paint”. The exhibition runs through June 22nd.

Durham Press @ INK Miami

We’re on our way to INK Miami next week, the show runs from December 2nd though the 6th.

INK Miami is located at 1850 Collins Avenue in Miami Beach, only a couple of blocks from Miami Basel, and admission is free- so we look forward to seeing you there!

It’s a great little fair that is dedicated only to prints. This year the participants are going to make an effort to bring some printmaking materials to give visitors a little insight into how prints are made. We are going to bring one of the jigs and all the woodblocks from one of our new Apfelbaums, as well as a great little slideshow of behind the scene at Durham Press!

We will be exhibiting a selection of our lastest prints including Hurvin Anderson, Polly Apfelbaum, Beatriz Milhazes, James Nares, Allison Elizabeth Taylor, and Ray Charles White.

And, as always, we will have monoprints and editions of many more artists to browse through. For more information on our artists, see our website.
