Girls’ Club’s current exhibition, Self-Proliferation, includes the work of Chitra Ganesh and Mickalene Thomas, both printed and published at Durham Press. The group show consists of a diverse range of editioned works by more than thirty artists from the collection of Francie Bishop Good and David Horvitz, including Mickalene Thomas’s Landscape Majestic and Chitra Ganesh’s portfolio, Architects of the Future.

Girls’ Club mission is to educate the public, nurture the careers of female artists, and to serve as a resource for art students and scholars, curators and practicing artists on the contributions of women to the field of contemporary art.”

Mary H. Dana Women Artists Series Galleries – September 1, 2015 – December 10, 2015

Chitra Ganesh has been named the 2015-16 Estelle Lebowitz Endowed Visiting Artist in Residence at Rutgers University. Her solo exhibition will be on view September 1st through December 10th, 2015 in the Mary H. Dana Women Artists Series Galleries at the Mabel Smith Douglass Library, Rutgers University. The exhibition will feature the portfolio, Architects of the Futurewhich was produced with Durham Press in 2014.

Protest Fantasies is Ganesh’s second solo exhibition with Gallery Wendi Norris in San Francisco. The exhibition will host a new body of paintings on canvas that vary in size and draw from her use of mixed media, digital collages and drawings. Ganesh continues to explore issues of gender, sexuality and mythology in this new series of works.

Beatriz Milhazes: Jardim Botanico

This is Beatriz’s first major U.S. retrospective and will feature over 40 large-scale abstract paintings, collages and screenprints inspired by Brazilian and European Modernism, Baroque forms, popular culture, and the decorations of Carnival.  During the early 1990s, the artist developed an unusual painting technique, in which she adhered separate images executed in acrylic paint—such as flowers, arabesques, lace patterns or peace-signs—onto canvases in a style that references collage, graffiti, and plastic decals. This practice results in richly textured surfaces that appear prematurely aged. The exhibition will  examine Milhazes’s evolution from softer, more decorative forms to harder-edged abstraction. Several Durham Press prints will be featured as well!

HIGH SPEED DRAWINGS demonstrates Nares’ masterful ability to capture precise moments in time and extend them through visual representation. In his new body of work, Nares introduces a new technique, using Chinese ink on paper to create rippling lines of various widths.

In a similar fashion to his Brushstroke paintings and ROAD PAINT series, Nares re-appropriates mechanical tools to create his artworks. He utilizes a spinning steel drum, powered by a motor. As the drum, with paper fastened to it, rotates, the artist draws lines of ink using paintbrushes he has created specifically for this body of work. As a result of the spinning drum and the artist’s precise movements, each band takes its own form. Nares’ artworks showcase his exploration on the subject of movement; some drawings he creates with one steady line, others from a continuously repeating stroke, but all manifest a careful choreography of spontaneity and control.”

Following the film Happy Birthday to a Beautiful Woman (2012), the exhibition acts as a portrait of my mother through her belongings. Taking the form of a domestic installation, the exhibition will include a series of bronze works cast from these personal items. Carrying great significance to both mother and daughter, these articles of clothing and jewelry are destroyed through this process of casting and are preserved and transformed into highly finished objects of nostalgia and memory.

Durham Press is proud to present Chitra Ganesh’s portfolio of prints, Architects of the Future.  The portfolio consists of four woodblock and screenprints in an edition of 25.  The prints measure 25 3/4 inches in height and range from 18 to 44 inches in width, and they combine between 15 and 40 impressions each.

In her drawing, painting, installation, text and film works, Ganesh excavates histories that typically have been excluded from the canons of literature and art.  She draws from a broad range of material including the iconography of Hindu, Greek and Buddhist mythology, 19th-century European portraiture and fairytales, song lyrics, as well as contemporary visual culture such as Bollywood posters, anime, and comic books.  Through a process of automatic writing, Ganesh probes these sources and narratives to uncover moments of absence and submerged desire.

In Architects of the Future, Ganesh integrates the visual language of 60s and 70s science fiction with imagery loosely inspired by the Amar Chitra Katha–a long-running comic series that portrays traditional Indian epics, history, and mythology.  The four prints form a nonlinear narrative of “unforseen desire and untimely loss” that occur in an alternate world in an imagined past and a distant future.  Within this retro-futurist universe, bodies, like time, are fluid.  They are doubled, dismembered, as well as exceeding their limits and extending into their surroundings.

By exploring bodies, space, and history through disparate visual languages, Ganesh asks her viewers to seek and consider alternate narratives of sexuality and power.  There are always untold stories trying to rise to the surface.

Chitra Ganesh is a Brooklyn-based artist who works–often collaboratively–in many disciplines, including drawing, painting, film, and text.  She holds her BA in Comparative Literature and Art Semiotics from Brown University and an MFA from Columbia University.  She is also an alumnus of Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and a 2012 recipient of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship in the Creative Arts.

Currently, she is an Artist-in-Residence at New York University’s Asian/Pacific/American Institute and the first Kirloskar Visiting Scholar in Painting at the Rhode Island School of Design. She has also been spending much of her time in India, where she has been extensively studying Indian comics and visual culture.

Ganesh’s work has been exhibited at venues such as the Brooklyn Museum, the Queens Museum of Art, the Asia Society, Bronx Museum of Art, Socrates Sculpture Park, White Columns, Momenta Art, and Apex Art in New York. International venues include the Museum of Contemporary Art (Shanghai), Devi Art Foundation (New Delhi), EVAM (Spain), Museum voor Moderne Kunst (Netherlands), ZKM (Germany), and the Prince of Wales Museum (Mumbai). She has displayed recent solo projects at the Gothenburg Kunsthalle, MoMA PS1, and The Andy Warhol Museum, and has shown her latest film at the Center for Asian American Media’s CAAM Fest.

Her work is represented in prominent international collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, and the Saatchi Collection. She is represented by Wend Norris Gallery in San Francisco. Architects of the Future is Ganesh’s first project at Durham Press.

Polly Apfelbaum was selected as the 2013 Tyler Distinguished Alumna.  The annual program brings together Tyler’s alumni and its recent graduates, with a lecture, studio visits and a two-person exhibit at Temple Contemporary.

In Apfelbaum’s first lecture, she referenced Gene Davis’s work “Franklin’s Footpath” and how it had made an enormous impact on her as a young artist.  The monumental mural of colorful stripes was painted on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in 1972 in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, sponsored by the museum’s Department of Urban Outreach.  Apfelbaum and her collaborator, Dan Cole (BFA 2010), decided to use the piece, which carried so much history in the city, as the inspiration for their joint show.

The immersive installation covers the walls and floor.  Apfelbaum created a striped wool rug, made by artisans in Oaxaca, Mexico and wallpaper that followed the pattern up throughout the room.  Guests are welcome to walk on the piece, preferably with striped socks!  At the entrance to the show, neon signs direct visitors into the gallery where a pile of shoes are left in the corner in the wake of a colorful abyss that stretches out beyond.  The space itself opens up into an almost futuristic dimension where the stripes resemble motion at top speed.  The stretch of lines on the walls and floor invite visitors to float through to the adjacent room where Dan Cole’s band, Revedog, played a great set on the opening night amidst a poignant video installation.  Cole created the music, video and exhibition poster using old photos of himself and Apfelbaum at the age of 21 with a backdrop of the iconic image from Time Magazine of Gene Davis painting the museum parkway.

The show runs through July 11th.

New York | Downtown Fair

Durham Press just returned from the Downtown Fair in NY this past weekend and showcased Polly Apfelbaum’s vibrant monoprint from 2012 entitled Nirvana Park 1.  The new satellite fair to Frieze, produced by Art Miami LLC, was well attended and received positive feedback for the inaugural year.  Artnet News listed Durham Press as the best booth at the fair!
