On View: “Ugo Rondinone: I ♥︎ John Giorno”

Durham Press would like to congratulate John Giorno on his is citywide retrospective, Ugo Rondinone: I ♥︎ John Giorno, an exhibition by his husband, artist Ugo Rondinone. Rondinone has organized the sprawling exhibition across 13 locations in Manhattan in honor of Giorno’s expansive artistic career and 80th birthday. “‘I ♥ John Giorno’ is a kaleidoscopic exhibition about the life and work of American poet and Tibetan Buddhist John Giorno, whose rich and stimulating life has woven many threads of American culture and spirituality.” – Ugo Rondinone. (New York Times)

Giorno was born and raised in Brooklyn and is regarded as a quintessential New York figure. The survey exhibition opens June 21st, with each of the 13 locations showcasing highlights of his career, dedications to the artist, as well as various collaborations with fellow artists and friends.

On View: Durham Press Artists @ Perez Art Museum


Polly Apfelbaum, John Giorno and Beatriz Milhazes are participating in current and upcoming exhibitions at the new Pérez Art Museum in Miami (formerly the Miami Art Museum). The $220 million building, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, opens this week.

Polly’s floor installation, Mojojojo, is featured in AMERICANA. The piece is inspired by the evil monkey in the Powerpuff Girls. The exhibition will extend until May 2015 and will rotate installations based on the theme of art produced in North and South America as well as the Carribbean.

The Perez will also host the first major United States retrospective by Beatriz Milhazes opening in September 2014. The exhibition, Jardim Botanico, will feature works produced over the past 25 years.

Poem Prints by John Giorno, Published by Durham Press, will be exhibited in A Human Document: Selections from the Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry. The exhibition presents an extensive selection from Ruth and Marvin Sackner’s broad collection of historic through contemporary works that combine word and image. The prints are also on exhibit at our booth at Art Miami.

John Giorno’s Welcoming the Flowers prints were recently highlighted in the Art on Paper 4th Annual New Prints review. The prints were also featured in an exhibition at Michael Berger Gallery in Pittsburgh, titled Words & Music. The show also included works by Cheonae Kim, Ken Aptekar, William Anastasi, Monique Prieto and Jane Callister.

John will also be featured in the upcoming exhibition Traces Du Sacre at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The show runs from May 7th – August 11th, 2008 and then travels to Munich in September. John will be a showing his We Gave a Party for the Gods…painting that he did in collaboration with Durham Press as well as perfoming at the opening.
