Making & Unmaking, curated by fashion designer and curator Duro Olowu, is the latest artist-selected exhibition at London’s Camden Arts Centre. Infusing together over 70 international artists, including Polly Apfelbaum and Hurvin Anderson, the show places traditional African textiles and Bauhaus tapestries along with contemporary works and new commissions.

The eclectic collage of works addresses themes that include cultural identity, representations of beauty, gender, sexuality, innocence, and the body. Olowu worked to create a sense of “artist hand,” where everything looks deeply handmade and not in any way mass produced. This exhibition was created with a desire to create harmony and diversity, and as a result, the works came together organically, much like Olowu’s fashion collections.

Durham Press would like to congratulate Hurvin Anderson on his first Canadian solo exhibition currently on view at the Art Gallery of Ontario. The exhibition titled, Hurvin Anderson: Backdrop, includes a comprehensive collection of recent paintings alongside previously unseen sculpture, photography, and large-scale drawings.

This traveling show, just recently on view in St Louis, fills the entire fourth floor of AGO’s Contemporary Tower. The exhibition offers viewers a glimpse into the bright and lively world of Jamaica– where Anderson’s parents are originally from. Each painting is a reflection of his thoughts of cultural identity and intimate familiarity of the Caribbean culture through his experiences in the Jamaican Afro-Caribbean community as well as his artist residence in Trinidad.

New Release: Hurvin Anderson | Mirror: Don’t Look Back

Durham Press is pleased to announce the completion of a new portfolio of prints by British artist Hurvin Anderson. Titled Mirror: Don’t Look Back and comprised of ten works measuring 35 7/8 x 28 1/2 inches, the portfolio combines intaglio and relief collograph, screenprint, and gold and silver leaf. It is published in an edition of nine.

In Mirror: Don’t Look Back, Anderson presents ten different adaptations of a single composition: a circle hanging slightly below center on a gray flower-patterned background. This collographic floral motif appears in each print, varying in shade and in the weight of the lines. The imagery within the circle changes more drastically throughout the portfolio. In one print, the “mirror” seems to clarify its surroundings; the circle features a sharper, more intelligible floral pattern. In another, the mirror has a transformational effect, with the luminosity of gold leaf contrasting with the relatively dull backdrop. Still others obscure the pattern encircling them, appearing as hazy orbs that Anderson has imbued with an almost otherworldly mystique.

Through repetition and subtle variation, the portfolio continues to develop themes common to Anderson’s work, such as the intersections of place and memory and familiarity and estrangement. Similar to his suite of paintings Peter’s Series—which was the subject of critically acclaimed exhibitions at the Tate Britain, London, and the Studio Museum Harlem, New York—the images in Mirror: Don’t Look Back fluctuate between abstraction and representation. Anderson employs a seemingly reticent geometric composition and largely unsentimental color scheme, but the title and the wallpaper-like backgrounds invoke connections to personal, intimate moments and to the home. The slight differences between the images further their elusive quality. It is unclear if the portfolio depicts ten mirrors that are alike, or if there is only one mirror that has been illuminated, obscured, and tarnished through the workings of time and memory.

Hurvin Anderson was born in 1965 in Birmingham, UK. He studied painting at the Wimbledon College of Art and received his Masters from the Royal College of Art in 1998. Anderson’s paintings have been exhibited in several solo shows, including “Art Now,” Tate Britain, London, 2009; “Peter’s Series,” Studio Museum Harlem, New York, 2009; “Subtitles,” Michael Werner, New York, 2011; “reporting back,” Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, UK, 2013; “New Works,” Thomas Dane Gallery, London, 2013; and “Hurvin Anderson: Backdrop,” Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, Missouri, 2015. Anderson has received many awards, including a residency at Dulwich Picture Gallery, London, a research fellowship at Cheltenham and Gloucester College, and the Caribbean Contemporary Arts Residency Programme, Trinidad. His work is in significant collections, such as the Saatchi Gallery in London and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. He lives and works in London.

Mirror: Don’t look Back will be on view at both the IFPDA Print Fair and Art Miami.

Tonight Hurvin Anderson opened his third solo exhibition at Thomas Dane Gallery in London. It runs from October 15th through November 16th. The exhibition at the gallery is in close conjunction with his first museum survey at IKON.  The show at Ikon is entitled ‘Reporting Back’, it spans more than fifteen years of painting. The exhibition in London presents new works. The two shows create a dialogue that reveals shifts and the careful evolution of Hurvin’s style. “A British painter of Jamaican descent, Anderson has become known for his interiors and landscapes that bear the hallmarks of his origins. Makeshift barbershops, public parks, country clubs, botanical gardens and the swimming pools of his youth are evoked in paint as lingering memories. These “sites of leisure”, as he likes to call them, recur as motifs, sometimes in series, sometimes years apart, drifting like his imagination through states of ‘in-between-ness’, adopting the visual languages – and states of mind- of both England and the Caribbean. The art critic Jennifer Higgie writes in IKON exhibition catalogue: “In (Hurvin Anderson’s) work, histories and memories intertwine; an English landscape might echo a garden in the Caribbean, and vice versa.. the journeys that are hinted at here are solitary, introspective ones. Yet, even in the loneliest of landscapes, someone hovers in the wings; everywhere has, to some extent, been shaped by human intervention.” An opening reception is on October 14th from 6-8pm in both gallery spaces, 3 & 11 Duke Street, St. James’s, London.

Ikon Gallery will be presenting a comprehensive exhibition of Hurvin Anderson’s paintings from September 25th through November 10th in Birmingham, England. The exhibition, reporting back, is a survey of Hurvin’s career from 1998 through Peter’s Series (2007-9). Reporting back will consume Ikon’s entire exhibition space. The Ikon Press Release: ” Anderson arrived on the international art scene with Peter’s Series, a number of paintings depicting the interiors of barbers’ shops, in particular one (owned by Peter) visited by Anderson with his father as a boy. A converted attic serving as an improvised salon for conversation as well as for cutting hair, this was a social retreat vital for many male members of the local Caribbean community; a place he equates to an English garden shed. By painting this subject, the artist was exploring a formative psychological moment, and by returning to it pictorially he takes us with him on a journey that is as sentimental as it is a faithful representation.

It is significant that often Anderson depicts sites of leisure, where the mind is usually free to wander. He talks often of being in one place “but actually thinking about another”, a fact of his life arising out of his cultural background. He grew up in the English Midlands preoccupied with visions of a warmer, more colourful ‘other country’ and from this experience has developed a way of seeing which he describes as “slightly outside of things”. Later paintings of the Caribbean embody this kind of perception with verdant green colour glimpsed behind close-up details of the fences and security grilles found in residential areas, or an expanse of water or desolate approach separating us, the viewer, from the point of interest in the centre ground. This method of composition signifies at once a kind of social and political segregation, a smartness with respect to the business of picture making, amounting to a kind of semi-detached apprehension of what Anderson encounters.

A major monograph illustrating works from across the artist’s career will be published to accompany the exhibition, including texts by Jennifer Higgie, writer and co-editor of Frieze.”

Hurvin Anderson is featured in an exhibition entitled Homebodies at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. The exhibition runs from June 29th through October 13, 2013.

“Homebodies presents work by contemporary artists who examine the space of the home, both literally and metaphorically, as an integral site for making art. Featuring an expansive range of artworks, some made of materials found in the domestic sphere and others that represent or re-create a sense of domesticity, Homebodies demonstrates a new understanding of how the domestic context has influenced the creation and interpretation of contemporary art. The exhibition incorporates various media, including paintings by Hurvin Anderson; sculptures by Vito Acconci and Rachel Whiteread; installations by Alexandre da Cunha and Do Ho Suh; photography by Marina Abramović, Barbara Kruger, Doug Aitkin, and Adrian Piper; video by Martha Rosler, Rivane Neuenschwander, and Guy Ben-Ner; and a living-room environment by Dzine that doubles as a nail salon. It is likewise international in its reach, drawing from six continents to include more than forty artists at various stages in their careers.”
